There are so many, many
products out there that are FUN! It is gratifying to see
how creative we humans can be. I encourage you to be inspired
by the out-of-the-box thinking that went into these offbeat
products I feature in each issue of DesignMuse.
I realize that for many
of you who might always have lived in a newly built home,
the concept of a radiator may be alien. However, many of
us in pre-war homes and buildings are all too familiar with
the radiator. Here at the right
is the most interesting radiator I have ever seen, courtesy
of Aeon (see
more about this product here)!
Really different in design form and, for my tastes, very
attractive. This is sculpture, a pattern, like the repetition
in a fabric. This is a play of materials and light. This
is utility and art bound together.
Many
of my clients wonder how to make radiators “disappear”
by using covers, cabinets, whatever—after all, they
can get a little
dreary. This is not an entirely new concept. The building
I live in was built in 1930 and one of the features touted
in the sales brochure of the day was the "modern"
radiator covers of 80 years ago. See the small image, way
in the upper left.
But the possibilities
of really attractive radiators abound. Consider yet another
striking example, the beautiful Milano radiator from Italy,
that looks for all the world like a freestanding sculpture.
See the image at the left, with
more information here.
The dog is not included.
I hope I can find a
way to incorporate these ideas into one of my designs one
day, assuming, of course, we don’t come up with a
truly new, efficient and sustainable method of heating our
buildings that goes far beyond steam heat. Still, we could
consider making the new way as artfully attractive as possible.
